The Seedbed (Collaboration with Rena Detrixhe)
Local Soil and Clay, Local Native Seeds and Hulls, Fired Repurposed Brick
Approximately 10 ft x 6 ft
2025

This work is designed using a combination of handmade unfired, native seed-bearing bricks created from local soils, and repurposed commercial bricks from local architecture in Kansas City. The raw clay bricks disintegrate over time, allowing the seeds to germinate and sprout. The fired bricks remain.

The Seedbed is a site-specific, ecologically active, land-based artwork that can be integrated into existing environments. Over time, the work transforms from something akin to an outdoor patio or pathway into a native plant garden, fundamentally reshaping the relationship to the location and artwork for both the non-human (from the microorganisms in the soil to the native pollinators and insects above ground) and human communities.

This work was created as part of the Material World Exhibition at Artspace in Fall of 2024. It has since become two smaller permanent installations in South Kansas City that are allowing Casey and Rena additional research and development opportunities for future collaborative works.
